Results, December 16-19

This week saw a couple of GAEA girls return from absences and a title switch.

Wednesday saw DDT's offshoot Union run a show. Sakura Hirota, who retired in 2005 but wrestled at Sasori's retirement show earlier this year made her formal comeback. She wore her rookie pink Arena swimsuit and did the job to Cherry.

Meiko Satomura also returned after her latest trip to the disabled list with that bad back. This was Sendai Girls' first show in several months, but they are yet again hampered by injuries, with Hiren's recent injury and Sendai Sachiko's continued absence. Yukari Ishino got her first singles win at home, beating Hamuko Hoshi. There's going to be a contest to give her a new ring name. The new also saw DASH Chisako and Ryo Mizunami get new costumes. DASH apparently hit up the WWE ShopZone during a Jeff Hardy clearance sale, but got the win via Cross Armbreaker over the big Mongolian girl Esui. Ryo Mizunami raided the Misae Genki/Aya Yuki closet and her new two-tone hair is pretty bad, but she's a good wrestler and won the JWP Junior and P.O.P. titles by beating Misaki Ohata. Satomura's comeback was also a success, as she concentrated on kicks (including some Muay Thai stuff) and submissions and finally put Azumi Hyuga under with a Sleeper Hold. Meiko didn't used the Death Valley Bomb at all; I think she might be protecting her back by abandoning that move.

Other action saw the usual small Ice Ribbon shows, a NEO house show, Fuuka playing Tiger Mask at an indy show, and a rare Ito Dojo show. The main development in NEO was Kyoko Kimura and Atsuko Emoto beating Mima Shimoda and Makoto, with Emoto pinning Mima. Mima then seemed to abandon Makoto, who was Etsuko's protege, and will wrestle with the Revolucion Amandola at NEO's Carnival show on 12/31. Ito Dojo featured Hanako Kobayashi beating Tomoko Morii, as they seem to get to feud with each other for a while. Asami Kawasaki's second match back ended badly, as she ended up eating a Vertical Drop Brainbuster from Aja Kong in a 6-man tag.

How come some joshi shows have so few matches or run to such a short time? Are all the matches you've listed in the results all that occured or were there more? If not is it just a given that all female shows run so short as I see that despite only 4/5 matches SENDAI drew 700 which is a great number for an all female show from what I've seen.

If there is only one or two matches listed, that almost always means that these were women's or mixed matches at a show that was otherwise a men's puroresu show. Five matches is pretty standard. For minor shows, like the Ice Ribbon shows or the JWP dojo shows, you'll get only 3 or 4 matches and the admission price is less.

Sendai Girls usually has 5 matches; they only had 4 this time because Hiren was hurt and they didn't find a replacement.

The biggest shows (stuff like the NEO year-end show) will have more than 5 matches. Also, if there's a one-day tournament, you can have many matches but then they are usually shorter.

Thanks for the reply, can I just ask you a couple more questions please? Do on shows where there is only 4/5 matches, do they do anything on the show to run the time on the show longer or is it just litteray match-match-match-match-match? Also do you know how much they roughly charge for tickets?

Many thanks again

:-D

I've never been to Japan, so I don't have first hand experience. I think 3000-5000 yen (more for the best seats at major shows) is pretty standard; that's about $30-$50. Some promotions will have other entertainment-I think Sendai Girls has a singer who usually sings a few songs and the Fuuka Matsuri shows always have singing/dancing. I'd guess groups like JWP are probably strictly wrestling.
