Results, May 24-30

The two biggest stories of the week involved a retirement and a new "promotion", but let's start with the tail end of OZ Academy's mini-expedition to Hokkaido.  Last weekend, they ran Sapporo in a show featuring Carlos Amano breaking her nose while defending the OZ championship.  This injury forced her to miss Monday's joint show with Big Japan in Asahikawa.  In addition to some undercard mixed tags, we saw Tomoka Nakagawa get a win in her hometown, pinning Nao Komatsu in a tag.  The semi-main event was changed due to Amano's injury and became a three way match between Manami Toyota, Aja Kong, and Ayumi Kurihara, with Toyota getting a jackknife pin on Aja.

Monday, May 24, 2010

Results, May 19-24

Let's start the weekly digest with news from oop north, as OZ Academy accompanied Big Japan for a pair of shows in Hokkaido.  Sunday the 23rd featured OZ at Sapporo Teisen Hall.  The semi-main event saw the five losers of the preliminary matches in a tag against the five winners.  The losers got revenge, with Hokkaido native Tomoka Nakagawa getting a pin on Mayumi Ozaki.  In the main event, Carlos Amano defended the OZ title with a win over Ran Yu-Yu by headbutt, but at the expense of a broken nose presumably suffered from a Ran elbow smash.  Monday's show in Asahikawa was joint with Big Japan.  Nakagawa got a win in her hometown, pinning Nao Komatsu in a tag match.  The main event here was turned into a three way due to Amano's absence, with Manami Toyota pinning Aja Kong in a match that also featured Ayumi Kurihara.

Revolucion Amandola had their special show on Friday the 21st.  As was announced last week, Atsuko Emoto/Bullfight Sora is retiring at the end of the month and I think this is the last appearance without the cow mask.  Kimura will be taking a hiatus to heal up some injuries.  R.A. did a lot of jobbing, with Kimura losing to Aja in a tag match, Nakagawa losing a mixed match to TAJIRI, and Emoto losing both a NEO High Speed Championship match to Natsuki*Taiyo and the main event tag, with the three members of R.A. losing to Nanae Takahashi, Natsuki, and Ayumi via Nanae's Nanaracak to Emoto.  Atsuko did get a pinfall on Kimura in a special bonus match.

A few other minor shows were held, with the usual two small Ice Ribbon events with the alarming result of 12 year old rookie Tsukushi pinning Emi Sakura in five seconds (wtf?), a NEO house show in Niigata that saw Manami Toyota and Misaki Ohata beat Yoshiko Tamura and Toshie Uematsu via Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex on Toshie, a weekday WAVE show with Ohka pinning GAMI and Ayumi beating both Shu Shibutani in the main event best 2 of 3 falls and Bullfight Sora in a special bonus match, and a JWP dojo show with Leon beating Kaori Yoneyama in a Bullrope Pool match.

Oh, and it appears that Kana is going to have her own faction/promotion with the Shirai sisters.  I'm not sure of the official name, but the otaku better stock up on handcream.

Kimura herself will be taking a hiatus to recover from various injuries after this show and the special Revolucion Amandola show next week, which features Emoto vs Natsuki*Taiyo for the NEO High Speed title and the three members of R.A. against Nanae Takahashi, Taiyo, and Ayumi Kurihara.

Of course, the massive news story from joshi puroresu this week was more bad news.  At NEO's 10th anniversary show at Korakuen Hall on May 5th, it was revealed that NEO will be folding after the New Year's Eve Day show this year.  Kyoko Inoue further announced (probably due to frustration with the retirements, lack of progress in developing new wrestlers, and differences with President Koda) that she has left NEO, effective immediately.  Yoshiko Tamura, Tanny Mouse, and Yuki Miyazaki all announced they are retiring together on December 31st.  Aya Yuki and Nagisa Nozaki will apparently follow Inoue in whatever comes next.

With Golden Week coming up next week, we had a fair amount of action this week.  Thursday saw Ice Ribbon in their last show before next week's Golden Ribbon from Korakuen Hall.  Sayaka Obihiro, a 23 year old, made her debut and another 12 year old is debuting on next Monday's show.  The main event saw HARASHIMA & Riho defeat Masa Takahashi & Emi Sakura.  Emi & Riho weren't involved in the pinfall, but Riho does put the ICEx60 Championship on the line against her mentor.  Emi apparently has read the Ricky Hatton Yo-Yo Diet training book, as she has reportedly lost 9 kg in one week to make the 60 kg weight limit.  Sure, I believe that.

Very little happened in the ring this week.  Ayumi Kurihara had her 5th anniversary match at an unusual location: outside the baseball stadium for the Chiba Lotte Marines.  She teamed with GAMI and beat Toshie Uematsu and Shu Shibutani via a modified back arm throw on Shu.

The major event in joshi puroresu this week was JWP's annual spring event known as "MANIA-X", held in Korakuen Hall on April 18th.  Sendai's Ryo Mizunami, who had defended the JWP Jr/POP titles against Kazumi Shimouma at an Ice Ribbon show the day before, beat JWP rookie Senri Kuroki, who got a halfway decent looking purple and silver costume.  Command Bolshoi & Tsukasa Fujimoto defeated Megumi Yabushita and Ayako Sato in a High Speed meets Submissions match.  Keito's 15th anniversary match saw her eat a Niagara Driver from Big Momma Kyoko Inoue.

The main news in joshi puroresu this week focused on the Sendai Girls tournament and on the U.S.A.-bound wrestlers.

A decent number of cards in joshi puroresu this week.  Let's start with Emi and the kids in Ice Ribbon.  The midweek show saw 12-year old Riho and weatherlady Aika Ando defeat Makoto & Hikari Minami, with Riho pinning Makoto.  Also, Miyako Matsumoto failed in her effort to add the DDT Extreme Championship to the ICEx60 and Triangle Ribbon belts she already has, losing to GENTARO.  The Saturday show saw a title change, as Miyako lost the ICEx60 Championship to little (OK, she's not really so little anymore) Riho.  Riho then challenged Emi Sakura at the Korakuen Hall show in early May.  That will be for the title, assuming Emi stays away from the Haagen-Dazs and the KFC to keep under 60 kilos.

WAVE was in action on Friday and Sunday.  Friday was a little trip to Yokohama to challenge the NEO roster (minus Kyoko Inoue and injured Nagisa Nozaki).  After Tanny Mouse and Yuki Miyazaki mopped up Moeka Haruhi and Sawako Shimono, and GAMI & Yoshiko Tamura went to a draw, then Yumi Ohka beat Aya Yuki.  HIROKA, in from Mexico this month, beat Bullfight Sora.  The main event saw Tamura join with the losers against GAMI and the winners, and finally Tamura got to pin GAMI.  Sunday's show was at the usual Shin-Kiba 1st Ring.  It was Toshie Uematsu's 36th birthday, so she teamed with new partner KAZUKI vs Jaguar Yokota and Cherry in a match with everyone in Uematsu costumes.  Toshie even got to win (no, not against Jaggy).  Moeka Haruhi and Misaki Ohata retained the TLW junior tag team belts, beating Ryo Mizunami and Kagetsu when Ohata pinned the latter Sendai Girl.  Ohka's 31st birthday resulted in a win over fellow ex-JD Star athtress Asami Kawasaki.  Then I'm sure there was some cake in teh face.

HIROKA, along with fellow CMLL luchadoras Princess Sugein and Sarah "Dark Angel" Stock, ran a special lucha show on Saturday.  FUKA Kid (i.e. Kaori Yoneyama under a mask) "retired", losing to Bolshoi Kid.  Passion Seven (Nanae) and Passion Nakki (Natsuki*Taiyo) beat Kyoko Kimura and Atsuko Emoto, with Natsuki & Emoto trading falls before the Passion Red duo beat Revolucion Amandola when Kimura was disqualified for ripping Nanae's mask off.  HIROKA teamed with Tomoka Nakagawa and beat Uematsu and Leon, Toshie tasting HIROKA's Muerte de Christ.  Dark Angel beat Princess Sugei by 2 falls to 1, and then Sugei won the battle royale, with Nakagawa as the final opponent.

JWP was in action on Sunday at Tokyo Cinema Club, with the final non-dojo show before MANIA-X at Korakuen Hall on the 18th.  HIROKA was here as well, and made KAZUKI taste the Muerte de Christ.  The OCC League final ended up as expected, with Nanae Takahashi using the Nanaracka to beat Tsubasa Kuragaki and earn the title shot against Kayoko Haruyama.

Finally, OZ Academy was at Shinjuku FACE.  The Carlos Amano-Manami Toyota five match series ended with everything square.  Amano's victory today with the Carlos Ghosn means both have 2 victories, 2 losses, and 1 draw.  I expect a final deciding match (probably for Carlos' OZ Academy title), to happen at some point, maybe at the May show in Sapporo or the next time they run Korakuen Hall (which is presumably in August for the Plum Mariko Memorial Show).  The main event saw Aja Kong, KAORU, and Tomoka Nakagawa triumph over AKINO, Ran Yu-Yu, and Hiroyo Matsumoto, with Aja using the Uraken on AKINO.  Not sure yet whether this is the end for the Jungle Jack 21 faction.  Oh, and the May 16th show at Shinjuku  FACE will be the 15h anniversary for Chikayo Nagashima, Sonoko Kato, Carlos Amano, and Ran Yu-Yu.

This week started off with JWP on Monday (3/22) in Osaka. They finally filled the tag titles, which had been vacant since Azumi Hyuga's retirment. The mismatchted midcarder team of KAZUKI & Toshie Uematsu, usually more known for working with other partners and feuding with each other, triumphed over Command Bolshoi & Megumi Yabushita. We also saw the final three matches of the round-robin portion of the JWP OCC (Open Class Challenger) league. Sachie Abe beat Yumi Ohka in a meaningless match. Nanae Takahashi ended up winning the outsiders block with 9 points after taking Leon's head off with a Lariat. Tsubasa Kuragaki used a lariat of her own on Ran Yu-Yu to finish with 8 points and win the JWP block. Those two will meet on April 4th (they had a draw during league play) and the winner moves on for a title shot against Kayoko Haruyama on April 18th in Korakuen Hall at the MANIA-X show.

A lot happened this week.  First, the original JoshiFans board, at http://joshifans.com/joshifansforum/index.php is back online and ready for joshi creepiness and fanaticism. Also, a lot of groups ran shows and we had some debuts and title changes and new titles and new "promotions".  Several groups ran Osaka along with the usual scattering of shows, so let's get to it.

Let's start this week's rundown with WAVE.  Ryo Mizunami beat Moeka Haruhi and then issued a challenge to Haruhi & Misaki Ohata for the junior tag belts, saying she'd get another Sendai Girl and would beat them.  Ohata was involved in the main event, as she teamed with Shu Shibutani and soon-to-be retired Fuuka to beat GAMI and the Shirai sister by 2 falls to 1.  Fuuka and Shu then had an impromptu singles match.  Also on the card was Yumi Ohka beating Leon in a JWP OCC league match.

Ice Ribbon did shows on Friday and Saturday.  The usual light house show action.  The most notable result was Saturday's main event, with Nanae Takahashi, Tsukasa Fujimoto, and Kazumi Shimouma beating Makoto, Hikaru Shida, and Hamuko Hoshi when Shimouma pinned Hoshi.

The joshi news dump this week is pretty sparse. On Monday during an indy show was the retirement ceremony for Nozomi Takesako. You may or may not remember her from her IWA Japan work a few years ago. She was injured a few days ago and subsequently married and had a child (and I think she married the infamous Chocoball Mukai, although I'm not 100% sure on that). This seemed like a belated send-off from her sleazy indy friends. Good luck to the Chocoball Family.

The limited action this weekend was all on the weekend.  Ice Ribbon ran Osaka and Nagoya on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  The Osaka show saw Tsukasa Fujimoto successfully defend the ICEx60 Championship with a win over Makoto.  The International Ice Ribbon Tag Team belts changed hands, as Nanae Takahashi and Kazumi Shimouma defeated Hiroyo Matsumoto & Hamuko Hoshi.  Sunday in Nagoya saw Fujimoto roll up her 3rd defense, beating teenager Hikari Minami, while Nanae & Emi Sakura beat Makoto & Hikaru Shida in the main event.
